Sumerian Creation

The Creation of Existence

Sumerians believed that Nammu the sea God gave birth to heaven and Earth. She is also the mother of An(God of Heaven) and Ki (God of Earth).

The creation of humans

Enki, God of water and wisdom tells Nammu to gather clay and water in order to mold and grow people. Men were created to relieve Gods of work. Nimah decides the build of men, while Enki finds a place in society for them.

*People really don't have a choice on how they are built or are fit into society because the Gods made them that way.

  • The Gods: Each of the Gods have a specific purpose and equal responsbility with human life. Humans are a Earthly representation of the Gods.

  • Pride: Even though the Gods have it all they still will do anything to get thier way to prove that they are the strongest( i.e Ninmah and Enki)

  • The Underworld: A place of punishment for the fallen, evil, and disobedient

  • Water: Sumerians believe that water is the source of all living things.

Biblical Similarities

There is a lot of speculation that the book of Genesis was derived from Sumerian myths.  I think that Sumerian Myth and biblical story are very similar. The only major difference is that there is more than one God and that Sumerians use Gods to establish between good and evil.
